Healthy Hacks For Eating Well at the Airport

by | Nutrition

Got Travel plans? Same here! Here are some quick tips to stay healthy (and keep your budget) when navigating the airport this summer:

  1. Pack a protein powder in your purse: If you are like me, your flight probably leaves at 6am because you like to be cheap- no shame, friends! On my last trip, I wasn’t especially hungry at 3:00 AM, but I knew I would get hungry later. Instead of buying a sugary coffee (which are abundant in airports), I brought a single serving packet of protein vanilla powder. Once I got past security, I purchased a black coffee, and added the protein powder to it. This was a much cheaper option than a sugary coffee, and also gave me some protein to help me stay full and energized during an exhausting day.
  2. Bring an empty water bottle: have you seen how much a water bottle costs at an airport? It’s outrageous. You need water when you travel, especially since it’s so easy to get dehydrated in the airplane. Water fountains (many with filters!) are now abundant in terminals, so bring an empty water bottle and fill it up after you get through security.
  3. Make wise food choices: It’s easy to let go of every healthy habit and go into “vacation mode” the moment we step into the airport. Indulging on occasion is great. In fact, I encourage it. You are going on vacation and there will be plenty of opportunities to indulge in family favorite treats or decadent local restaurant fares. Don’t “waste” your indulgences in something that will likely not be worth it—like overpriced, greasy, sloppy and not-so-delicious airport food. Here are some tips:
  • People get nervous about bringing food on the airplane, but you can absolutely bring a pre-packaged protein bar. Choose one with less than 8 grams of added sugar and at least 3 grams of fiber. Want a suggestion? We love EPIC bars.
  • You can totally find a basket of fresh mandarins or bananas somewhere in the airport! Better yet, you can bring whole or sliced bananas (at least in the continental U.S.) through security. Save money and bring your own fruit. Want to know what all you can bring? Check your item HERE.
  • Finally, just about every airport coffee shop has oatmeal available for sale. Choose the unsweetened/unflavored kind and you’ve got yourself a healthy breakfast. Better yet? Bring your own dry oatmeal packet, and if you prefer your coffee black, you can add that protein powder packet to the oatmeal for a budget-friendly, balanced, and nutritious option.

A final note: not all airport restaurants have unhealthy food. If you are in Denver, Root Down Restaurant is nailing the healthy and delicious game (a favorite of mine!). You can always order a salad with grilled chicken and dressing on the side or a veggie omelette at just about any airport restaurant.
