Our theme this past month in the BodyFit Athletic Club has been MOTIVATE. We’ve been on a mission to both stay motivated during the tough times and difficult seasons, but also to combat that “all or nothing” trap so many of us fall into. So often we use words like “fail” or “quit” when it comes to our fitness journey. But fitness is a journey, not a destination, and there will be ups and downs. Life happens, and motivation comes and goes. The key to success is how we react. If we have a rough parenting day, we can’t just quit. When work gets overwhelming, we can’t decide we’ve failed and work just isn’t for us. We (hopefully) give ourselves some grace, decide it’s just one day, and keep showing up. Why wouldn’t we extend that grace to ourselves in our health and fitness journey? This is why I always remind you to Be Where you are today, and know that If you show up, you’re successful.
Mix it up. Variety is key when it comes to working out, not just for our bodies but for our brains. Often when we make a big commitment to a gym or a program, we feel we must stick to the original plan no matter what. Change it up by getting outside or trying a workout at home and then come back to the original plan when you’re ready.
Take a break! Yep, I said it! The drive and excitement we feel in January to work hard is great but can often lead to fatigue and overtraining. Listen to your body and take days off when needed. Or add a day or yoga or meditation over that regular HIIT class.
Change Your perspective. Each New Year, our news feeds are dominated with the next big way to change your life, and our plans and goals tend to revolve around ourselves. But we also need to remind ourselves how our own self care benefits those we love. Having more energy to keep up with the kids, relieving stress, and being healthier for the long term are all ways exercise makes you a better parent, spouse, and friend. Being the happiest, healthiest version of ourselves is the best thing we can do for those we love.
Remember, less is more. Working multiple muscle groups at once with compound movements is a great way to maximize time and efficiency and it can make workouts feel more manageable. No need to spend an hour a day seven days a week—get it all done in 20-30 minutes with a BodyFit by Amy workout!
The bottom line is it’s about consistency not intensity, quality over quantity. Fitness is just as much of a mental game as it is physical and keeping your brain and body in check is key to long term health!
